Juan is a Doctor in Social Sciences from the University of Antioquia and holds a Master in Rural Economics from the Federal University of Ceará-Brazil. He is also a specialist in finance from the Latin American Autonomous University and an agricultural engineer from the National University of Medellín.

At the FAO (Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations), he is coordinator of national territorial management and territorial coordinator of Antioquia.
